Woolworths South Africa
Recently, Salanova® was mentioned in ‘Taste’, the store magazine of Woolworths South Africa, as the multi-leaf lettuce has been present on this supermarket giant’s shop shelves since October 2006. Initially in 15 of its stores around Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Salanova® range at Woolworths consists of duo-packs with one red and one green head of multileaf butterhead lettuce, bags containing 100% ready-to-use green multileaf butterhead lettuce, and bags containing a salad mix of red basil, rocket and green and red multileaf butterhead lettuce. The pre-cut, ready-to-use lettuce products are the most popular. At present, Salanova® is grown exclusively for Woolworths by three South-African growers, and two processing plants are also involved in the project. Unfortunately, production around Cape Town experienced a setback last season when there was an outbreak of leafminer. In order to consolidate the status that had been achieved, efforts are now being made to optimise the growing process and to sell the product in more shops.
